Honestly if you’re just starting out, just find some beginner tutorial for whatever editing software you’re using. Doesn’t really matter which one, YouTube has a ton and most of them are fine. Just learn the basic controls, where stuff is, what the tabs do and all that first. After that you kinda start understanding what the program can actually do and then you just mess around with it.
Start making random videos you’d actually enjoy making — movies, gaming clips, vacations, dumb stuff with friends, whatever honestly. Doesn’t gotta be anything crazy. Just getting used to cutting clips, playing with music, timing, text, transitions and stuff like that.
While doing that you’ll probably see edits or effects you wanna try but have no idea how to do yet, and that’s where YouTube and Google come in. You kinda learn as you go and honestly that’s probably the fastest way to improve.
Also bonus tip, make a social media page or YouTube or even Vimeo or something. Having somewhere to post your stuff actually keeps you motivated to keep creating.
Good luck man.

Start simple and don’t over edit everything. Focus on clean cuts, good audio, and telling a good story. Learn keyboard shortcuts early because they save a lot of time. Also, finish projects even if they not perfect — that’s how you really improve.

Biggest thing first: don’t try make every video “cinematic” at beginning. Most beginners get stuck because they over-edit everything 😅

Some real useful tips:

Cut more than you think. If a clip feels little boring, probably audience also feel it.
Audio is super important. Bad video with good sound = still watchable. Good video with trash sound = people leave fast.
Learn keyboard shortcuts early. It feel annoying first, but later it save sooo much time.
Don’t use too many transitions. Simple cuts usually look way cleaner than crazy spinning effects.
Keep your edits matching the music beat when possible. Even small cuts on beat make video feel way more professional.
Organize files before editing. Future you will seriously thank you 😂
Watch videos you like and ask yourself “why this part feel good?” Copying style for practice is normal.
Color correction first, fancy color grading later. Beginners mix those up all the time.
Finish projects even if they imperfect. Most people improve by completing stuff, not by endlessly fixing one video.
Your first edits probably gonna look bad. That’s normal honestly. Everybody starts there.

Also, don’t spend months searching “best editing software.” Just pick one and start:

DaVinci Resolve = amazing free option
Adobe Premiere Pro = industry standard but expensive
CapCut = super easy for short videos

When you’re just starting with video editing, keep things simple. Don’t worry too much about fancy effects at first. Focus more on clean cuts, good music, and clear audio because that makes a huge difference. Try to practice regularly and finish small projects even if they not perfect. You honestly learn more by doing than watching tutorials all day.

Editing gets easier the moment you stop chasing everything “cinematic” and start focusing on clean. Most beginners overdo transitions, effects, zooms… what I feel honestly, simple cuts and good pacing already make a video feel polished. Audio matters more than people realize, clips usually need to be shorter than you think, and messy files will actually come back to haunt you later.
